Canada’s Contribution to Space Exploration

Space Exploration

Canada is not only limited to Rocky Mountains, Huge Lakes, and Prairies as the majority might think. In fact, Canada has also significantly contributed to space exploration as well.

One of Canada’s famous Astronauts is Chris Hadfield. He is known to be a musical astronaut because he traveled space 3x while playing his musical instruments without gravity.

Another Astronaut that Canada is proud of is Roberta Bondar. This woman holds several degrees in Universities such as science, agriculture, philosophy, zoology, and medicine. She is very adventurous too, having certifications in both parachuting and skydiving. All her efforts did really pay off because she is the first woman from Canada who will travel to space along with 8 other Canadians who were chosen to assist in the upcoming space missions.

 Evidence of Black Holes

The thought of black holes do really blow our minds off. They are like vacuums sucking up matter that is near enough to it in space. They can be difficult to see as they turn smaller as its gravitational pull gets stronger. For a long period of time, Scientists believed in the existence of black holes even if they didn’t find one.

Then, the researchers of the University of Toronto found the proof of the existence of black holes back in 1972. They used a very potent telescope from the David Dunlap Observatory. They called the black hole Cygnus X-1 and that major discovery placed Canada on top.

Mars Crater Names

Mars is known to have several craters on its ground surface. In reality, Scientists give them names to be kept in line with their research, even naming them after some areas in Canada. It is a fact.

So, if you are located in any of the areas in Canada listed below, then know that a Crater on Mars is named after your place!

  • Alberta: Banff, Chinook, Okotoks,Windfall
  • British Columbia: Hope, Penticton, Quick
  • Manitoba: Souris
  • Northwest Territories: Inuvik
  • Newfoundland: Canso, Gander, Nain, Nakusp, Nipigon, Natuk
  • Ontario: Dinorwic, Doon, Loon
  • E.I.: Kinkora, Tignish
  • Quebec: Chapais, Clova, Lachute
  • Saskatchewan: Endeavor, Tugaske

Canadarm

Canada was proud of its creation, the Canadarm. The Canadarm was a robotic arm that can be controlled using a remote. This robot has been used in 90 space missions for about 30 years. It was a great help to space satellites and shuttles, and it even constructed the ISS (International Space Station). It was so strong that it could carry up to 30,000 kg with gravity and 266,000 kg without gravity.
