The Dazzling Venus and the Crescent Moon Shining Together In space

The Dazzling Venus

2 and ½ hours after sunset, Venus continues to show itself in its silvery-white color situated at the southwestern sky. Last Dec 28 2019, on a Saturday night, Venus shined together with a beautiful crescent moon during twilight.

On the first few months of this year, we will have four opportunities to see them both together again, so save the dates: Jan 28, Feb 27, March 28, and April 26.

Search for Earthshine

For many upcoming Saturday evenings after Venus and the Crescent Moon, the full moon will show itself with a dark part which is bluish-gray in color absorbing it’s light from the Earth.

The bluish-gray light was named by Leonardo da Vinci as the Earthshine. The Earth’s light actually is a reflection of the sun’s light, therefore, Earthshine’s true light comes originally from sunlight.

To give you an illustration, imagine you are on the moon on a Saturday evening, and you look up into the sky. What you would possibly see is nearly the whole part of the Earth. The Earth’s phases in reality are exactly opposite from the moon’s phases in the Earth’s point of view.
