Smoking in space
Smoking is a curious thing to be done in space. As you should know, smoking or vaping is not allowed in aircraft. However, it is an undeniable fact that there have already been instances of astronauts carrying cigarette packs in space.
NASA has been sending men out to space since the early 1900s. A lot of known astronauts and space explorers are smokers. Packs of cigarettes have been reported to be seen in shuttles here and there. It is not clear whether these were lit up during the mission or in space, but pieces of evidence were present.
It is risky both for the aircraft and the people in it to have even one cigar lit up during a mission in space. It may affect the pressure and the oxygen level within the place.
Is smoking allowed?
NASA or any other space agency associated with space work does not allow astronauts to smoke in space—be it inside the shuttle or out in the open. It has never been allowed and even stricter rules about it are being implemented today. It is not safe to be carrying flammable objects in space.
Also, the cleanliness and condition of the space shuttle must be maintained at all times. It will be hard to keep it in pristine condition if smoking is present. Smoking can leave stains and cause dust build-up.
Unlike vaping, smoking is not recommended to be done indoors especially if the ventilation system of that place is not good. In this case, given that the place is a tightly closed aircraft with limited oxygen levels, it could be dangerous and risky.
Will Vaping Work in Space?
The simple answer is yes, it does, and it can work in space. Lighters and vaping devices can work in space. It’s just not guaranteed that it will be safe or that it will not cause any spontaneous combustion to happen. With the right amount of pressure, lighters can work there. Vaping is more realistic to be done in space since e-cigarettes are battery-operated. Both ways to emit smoke are not allowed in space but it could definitely work.
Smoking or vaping can definitely reduce work stress but sadly, astronauts won’t be able to enjoy these (when they’re in space, at least). NASA is clearly trying to give its spacemen a comfortable work environment but for now, smoking and vaping can’t be a part of it. In the near future, who knows if a new technology to emit vapor safely in space will be developed? The possibilities are endless.
